Go Karts
the first go kart http://www.rearenginekarts.com/the%20first%20kart.htm
A Go Kart is a simple vehicle. A go kart is just ment to go not be luxurious. There are different types of go karts off road, racing etc. Regardless of the type of go kart they all are just a frame, wheels, and a engine. Go karts should not be taken lightly as some can reach speeds of 160mph and acelerate from 0-60 in 3 seconds.
The first type of go kart I will be talking about is a racing kart. A racing kart has no suspension because the tracks they race on are smooth. Chassis are made up of steel tubing. There are four types of chassis configurations, open, caged, offset and straight. A open chassis means that there is no roll cage and the driver is in the open. A caged chassis has a roll cage. Caged karts are usually raced on dirt tracks. The offset chassis has the driver siting on the left side. This configuration is used for oval racing where the kart only turns left. The last type is the straight chassis. The straight chassis is used for sprint karts with have to turn all ways and acellerate quickly.
Racing karts use a live axle. This means that the inside tire has to lift off of the ground just enough to lose some traction so it can turn.
this chainsaw engine was modified to become an early kart engine http://www.vintagekarts.com/
Racing go karts usually use high proformance 2 strokes or 4 strokes. Most 2 strokes are water cooled today. In the early days of go karting engines were 2 stroke air cooled. Some early karters converted chainsaws to use as a power plant. McCulloch became the first manufacturer to make engine just for go karts in 1959.
That is my wiki on the history of racing karts. Thanks for reading.
